چکیده

In support of collaboration among individuals whose work involves exploration of data networks (such as the World Wide Web, or sets of intelligence information, or more detailed databases of scientific information), some researchers are examining a problem that I will call “quest reuse”. The central idea is that a person doing such research is on a quest that has specific goals. Those goals are reflected in the search moves and value judgments made by the investigator. This chapter will research the problem of storing in compact form those moves and judgments so that later investigators may exploit them to speed and increase the effectiveness of their own research. Anyone who puts down a task, and resumes it some time later makes use of the associating powers of the brain, and of various support systems, to get the human mind back in context. The same individual, even when working with the same set of data, might have several possible contexts, and, indeed might have several contexts simultaneously latent in mind while scanning or browsing. We know that the human mind is superb at this scanning and AbstrACt

Towards a Procedurally Generated Experience: A Structural Analysis of Quests

In this paper, we present a quest structure, in the form of a grammar, obtained from an analysis of the main quests of a single player role playing game (RPG), namely “The Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt“. This grammar extends a previously presented analysis by other authors on MMORPG quests. This extended grammar is suitable for application in single player RPGs. The grammar allows the procedural gene...

QuestBrowser: Making Quests Playable with Computer- Assisted Design

Good gameplay has been characterized as a series of interesting choices. Therefore, to have gameplay of any sort requires the player to be presented with decisions. Given this definition, many quests within computer role-playing games are not playable as they currently exist. Instead, quests are given to the player as a series of tasks to perform in a specific way in order to advance the story ...

A Demonstration of SQUEGE: A CRPG Sub-Quest Generator

Scripting the plot in a computer role-playing game requires a large number of scripts that are difficult to program, track and maintain. Game adventures often include simple plots, called side-quests, that are independent from the main plot. Sidequests are important, as they add value to the open-world appeal of the game (e.g., for acquiring experience or resources), but they still need scripts...

Situating Quests: Design Patterns for Quest and Level Design in Role-Playing Games

The design of role-playing games (RPGs) is very complex, involving an intricate interweaving of narrative, quest design, and level design. As an important means for conveying the game’s story, quests dictate the setting and contents of levels. Levels provide challenges for the player to overcome in the service of completing quests, and their structure can invite the inclusion of certain kinds o...

Towards Procedural Quest Generation: A Structural Analysis of RPG Quests

An analysis of several role playing games indicates that player quests share common elements, and that these quests may be abstractly represented using a small expressive language. One benefit of this representation is that it can guide procedural content generation by allowing quests to be generated using this abstraction, and then later converting them into a concrete form within a game’s dom...
